HAVE YOU EVER GOOGLED “DOOR HANGING” or DESIGNING ONLINE ???

Until recently, the thought to Google door hanging had never entered my mind … until I received a phone call recently from someone wanting to know more about burlap door hangers! Burlap? Really? But, yes, there is such a thing! All of you do-it-yourselfers might like this one! You start with your initial – cut in wide strips of burlap – then stuff or pad them – and decorate with your favorite adornments. Hummm …

SPEAKING OF DO IT YOURSELF … AND DOOR HANGERS … ADEAS PRINTING has a great online design tool package! The new/much improved tool was launched nearly a year ago – and has been incredibly popular! Customers love it … so I decided to try it myself! True – I did “play with” the new stuff during its development, but hadn’t really spent much time with it lately. What I discovered is that it is really pretty cool and easier to use than I thought it would be. If there are any doubters out there … I dare you to try it – just for fun. Bet you’ll get hooked and end up creating lotz of different pieces. Some you’ll probably use just because you’ll be impressed with what you’ve done.

Here’s how it works!
• 1st … go to www.adeasprinting.com
• Click on a product you’d like to try. I chose Door Hanger Band-It. Open by clicking on the picture.
• On the next screen, choose DESIGN ONLINE since the purpose of this exercise is to design something yourself!
• Next screen – choose MAKE YOUR OWN DESIGN / Customize since my plan is to design my own print piece.
Just click in the blue box.
• The first screen shows a couple of tips at the top of the page … talking about uploading print-ready designs, bleeds, etc. It’s okay to read this because you might find it interesting – or educational if you’ve never read this kind of stuff before, but it isn’t necessary for this quick, simple exercise.
• The “design” part of the page shows the design space … trim lines, safe zones … the space that is yours to design.
• Tabs at the top give you options to visit the Image Gallery – which contains 248 pictures of many different things.
Go ahead and click on the second picture … the one of the kids. Wha-la! That picture magically appears on your screen.
By clicking on one of the dots that surround the picture – you can change the size. You can also move the picture up and down on the page by clicking on the picture and using your “arrow” keys to move the picture up or down.
You can add a background … add TEXT by clicking on the T tool. A TEXT PROPERTIES box opens to the right on your template. You can pick a font, font size, color, layout … whatever you want to do … simply by clicking on the object you want to work with … and moving it around or changing it. Whatever you want to do … it’s as easy as CLICKING!

First timers should probably do this without the benefit of TVs in the background, or kids having noisy fun, or after you’ve had a long day. Just relax … take a breath … drop those shoulders … and enjoy the experience. Remember! You can’t screw anything up. If you do – just click on whatever you want to change – then DELETE it! If you create something that you think has merit and you may actually use … SAVE IT. In the same “tab line” as My Image … Backgrounds … to the right you’ll see a box that says PROCEED TO SAVE. There are a couple of easy to follow instructions to save your project. Don’t worry … nothing is going to happen to your file unless you actually place an order. There is no obligation if you work with the design tool package or tour the website. We do want you to experience the design online tool … just so you can see how it works.

WHAT IS UV COATING ??? SHOULD YOU USE IT ???

ADEAS PRINTING is pleased to announce that we now offer UV coating. You’ll find ADD HIGH GLOSS UV COATING as an additional option on our website. Choosing this option would add a High Gloss UV coating to your printed product. The coating is applied after your order has been printed and cured with a special machine using Ultraviolet Light. UV Coating does not make your printed piece water resistant because the water can still get into the outside edges of the paper which will not be sealed like they would if you had the product laminated for example. It also does not protect your printed product from the sun. It does however, provide a little protection and makes your final printed product really pop.

Some key points regarding the addition of UV Coating to your print order. It cannot be added to the back side if your job includes Stick. UV Coating may not easily be written on with a standard pen. You would need to use a permanent marker.

UV coating is a blend of compounds (polyethylene/calcium carbonate/kaolinite) that is applied to printed sheets – then instantly dried by ultraviolet light. The result is a glossy – shiny finish – that makes your printed piece look like a high quality photograph. The UV coating not only makes color POP – the finish also protects your beautiful color from the harmful, fading effect of light / sunlight. Another benefit of UV coating is durability. Your piece will stand up to wear and light cleaning where uncoated surfaces quickly fade and do not withstand even gentle cleaning. Your UV coated print not only looks great, it will have a much longer “life” than a standard printed piece without any coating.

SHOULD YOU USE IT? … or WHEN SHOULD YOU USE IT?
Whether or not you decide to use UV coating depends on your objective for your printed piece AND how the piece will be used or displayed.
• For posters that will be displayed in office windows or store fronts, you should definitely consider UV coating. The coating will give your piece a professional appearance AND reduce fading. The poster will look great for a long time!
• For flyers / brochures that are intended to put your company’s best foot forward … UV coating will give them the attention-getting appearance of vivid color and easy-to-read text
Business cards present a “wow” impression of you and your company when UV is added
Door Hangers and Flyers are also candidates for UV coating – again – depending on how you want to use them.

UV coating adds a little cost to your piece. Whether you consider the small increase as an ROI depends on how or where the piece will be used, or displayed, or how long you expect it to “look good” to the public or your customers. UV isn’t for everything nor every print project. But if you have an application that needs some special attention, you might want to check it out.

IF YOU’RE JUST STARTING OUT … ADVERTISE!

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs and posts on various websites lately … and see the following statement repeated often: The best form of advertising is “word of mouth”! That is true… you can’t beat referrals from satisfied customers! BUT how do you go about getting those first customers and building the base that will eventually form your WOM army?

SIMPLE ANSWER – you ADVERTISE! If you look up the definition of “advertising” you’ll find several options … all with a
similar meaning: the public communication of information through media. Media includes such things as direct mail,
telephone, print, radio, TV and, of course, the internet.

FIRST THING …
• Identify your business: Name / Address / Logo / Contact Information / Services

CHOOSE YOUR ADVERTISING MEDIUM …
As a first time / start up business, you should consider the following elements as you put your plan together:

• Business-To-Business Opportunities
Partner with a local business that has a similar customer base.
Share business cards / fliers … with a deal that would appeal to both customer bases.
• ROP / DISPLAY ads for local newspapers / newsletters / deal magazines.
Most businesses start off with a website so customers can find you on the net / social media.
Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket! Spread your advertising around so your information finds its way into the hands of a wide range of customers.

BE CONSISTENT – ESTABLISH YOUR LOGO / IMAGE
Your printed materials should all include at least one consistent frame of reference … such as a logo / graphic / name … that customers will come to recognize as your brand name / look / appearance. You are building name recognition. You are creating / building your image.

BE PROFESSIONAL
If you’re not creative – have a professional help you design / create / lay out your advertising materials. Remember! You are establishing your business – brand – image. Make sure it looks professional! Clean … simple … easy to read.
Use attractive, eye-catching colors … great looking photography or graphics … clean fonts that are easy to read. Yes you have a lot to say … but don’t create an eye chart that will immediately turn your potential customers off. It may be better to spend a little of your budget getting started with a professional portfolio (logo/graphic/style) of print – than depend on down & dirty / DIY – which sets the base image of your company in the eyes of your customers.

DECIDE AND MOVE FORWARD … Once you’ve decided on your logo / graphic / style … apply it to your first choices for print. Be sure to include that “look” on your website. You are building name / brand recognition.

POSTCARDS … Direct Mail

DIRECT MAIL POST CARDS have always been a great way to get your message to your potential customers. We get a lot of questions from customers new to direct mail concerning the purchase of their mailing list and the need for an overall direction to get started.

Today I will begin by listing the three types of mailing lists that can be provided by commercial list vendors such as ourselves. Knowing more about these list types will help you begin to narrow down the demographics for your final postcard mailing.

• Occupant
• Consumer
• Business

OCCUPANT: This is similar to the type of list you would be mailing to if you did an EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) mailing. This list includes the address of every occupant (homes/apartments/businesses/mobile homes/PO Boxes) in a particular area. It comes pre-sorted and saturated by carrier route and guarantees the maximum postal discounts. You can request this list by zip code, city or even run a radius around a specific address or zip code. You don’t have to include every address in a zip code, but this could effect your postage rate. For example, if you are a carpet cleaning company, you would most likely not want to mail to an apartment complex because the individual apartment residents don’t hire carpet cleaning companies. If you order an “occupant” list, you could request the apartments not be included in the count.

One advantage of ordering an occupant list is they typically cost less than consumer or business lists. The addressee is generally CURRENT RESIDENT or CURRENT OCCUPANT, but for an added cost you can request names where available. Another option is to request all the addresses be mailed to the same addressee title that will help connect the recipient with your company or restaurant … such as PIZZA LOVER.

The other advantage is if you saturate a carrier route (every address on a route) you earn deep discounts from the post office! As long as you are mailing to at least 92% of a carrier route, your mail will qualify for the saturation postage which is what you need to compete with the EDDM type of mailing prices. Just keep in mind that by eliminating apartments for example, you may no longer be saturating that route and your postage will go up. A suggestion is to simply leave that route off your direct mail campaign if you don’t want to pay the additional postage to mail to that route OR you may decide it’s worth it to go ahead and mail the entire route to earn the postage discount, it just depends on your demographic and it if will bring you a better ROI (Return On Investment) to do it one way vs another.

The count report we supply with an occupant list includes valuable information about each carrier route – Median Income and Median Home Value of each route just to name a few. Reviewing this information as you make your decision is very helpful as choosing routes that fit your demographic will help you narrow down your count and save money from sending to homes or businesses that would normally not purchase from you.
